Note from JPMD: I'm posting this for my friend Van. I met his Aunt Barby at his wedding; she was a sweet lady.
Nine days gone now
There is still a dull haze in my eyes
Numbers and schedules swirl in my head
Thankfully keeping my mind occupied
Like a butterfly my mind flutters from place to place
Never lighting too long in one thought
The state fairs, the camping trips
Better to concentrate on boarding calls...
Nine days gone now
I'll miss your smile, your infectious laugh
The way you told a story
We laughed together and we cried together
But we always had tomorrow.
Your friends knew me
"You were her favorite nephew" they said,
Sadly, to my surprise
The times we shared rest comfortably on the back of my mind
Nine days gone now
My friends now know you too
for they have seen me mourn my loss.
I wonder if you were surprised as well
to find that you were also my favorite.
I watched you mourn as sisters
as we said goodbye to my mother
Three is now reduced to one
as your sons struggle to do it right
Nine days gone now
Ten days gone soon
Maybe the butterfly will rest tomorrow.
