Corona, CA. The Widget Rally Team used the Tombstone Rallysprint on 6 April 2002 as a final shakedown run prior to the Oregon Trail Rally running two weeks following. Driver Leon Styles and codriver John Dillon (Thousand Oaks) drove plenty of miles in the Audi Quattro S2 prepared by Tato Rcing.
It was the first time the two actually ran in the car together. Due to prior commitments, the previous testing session last March was run with Chris Shields substituting for Dillon. Shields will be assisting Tato Racing's George Plsek Sr at Oregon.
Another new crew member, Rob Marssdorf, will help in Oregon. "Rob wrote to me and asked if he he could be a part of the team or the weekend. We can alway use an extra hand, and it's a great way to introduce more people to the sport.
"Rob said: "I met the Widget guys in Oregon a couple of years ago and was impressed with their professionalism. Since they were coming back up this year, I thought I'd see if I could see how their operation worked from the inside."
Styles reports: "The testing went well. We drove a lot of hard miles and practiced using stage notes. John helped create notes for the course here at Tombstone so it gave us a chance to work together and get into the rhythm of the calls.
His codriver closed, reporting "Now that I've ridden with Leon for a day I'm even more comfortable in the car with him. He's quick, but sane. I think we'll do well together."
