Widget Codriver instructs at two rally schools.

[Students at the Willows Rally School pay close attention to Mike Gibeault] Willows, CA. John Dillon, codriver for the Widget Rally Team, contributed his expertise and experiences to novice rallyists at a performance rally school hosted by the SCCA's San Francisco Region on 27 Sep 2003. The school, organized by Greg Montgomery and co-instructed by Mike and Paula Gibeault, mirrored a similar program sanctioned two weeks earlier by the SCCA's Cal Club Region. That event, organized by Ray and Donna Hocker, featured the same core cadre of instructors, with Dave Turner providing additional classroom lectures on car preparation. Both schools were developed and coordinated under the auspices of the California Rally Series (www.CaliforniaRallySeries.com).

These rally schools featured several top drivers and codrivers to help the students during in-car training sessions. At the Willows school, 2002 Woodner Cup champion Lauchlin O'Sullivan and 2003 PGT ProRally codriver champion Lee Sorenson joined Carl Jardevaal, Chris Burns, Bruce Davis, Rui Brasil, Craig and Tamara Hollingsworth, Pete Soper, Bill Feyling, and others to teach the students car control and navigation techniques in a safe, controlled environment. The Ridgecrest school features instructors like Don Shreyer, Chrissy Beavis, Lon Peterson, Patrick Rodi, Paul Nelson and many others.

Dillon, the 2002 codriving champion for the California Rally Series, expressed the sentiments of many instructors. "I like 'giving back' to the sport. Rallying has been a thrill since I first got involved. If I can share that excitement with others, I feel I've accomplished something. Even more importantly, our curriculum helps make our future competitors better, safer racers."

The California Rally Series typically offers three schools a year, two in Ridgecrest and one in Willows. The most recent event in Willows had 63 students--and they had to turn away several people. "We only had room for fifty driving students," reported organizer Greg Montgomery. "There were several more on the waiting list. They'll have to wait until next February to attend down south."

At the end of the classroom session and pizza party, the Tahoe Beach and Ski Club donated plenty of door prizes to the crowd, a nice way to finish a long, informative day. Subaru Western Region made a generous donation to help make the school possible. Additionally, Subaru and Mitsubishi offered lots of hats and posters to the enthusiastic students.

The Widget Rally Team is supported by Perforce Software, the fast software configuration management suite; 7-24 AirX, for all your national and international freight needs; Worr Games, manufacturing the world's best paintball weapons; Tombstone Paintball Park, Orange County's premier paintball field; Porterfield Enterprises, makers of superior brakes for superior drivers; and Shults Dot Com, delivering web services that meet your requirements.
