Hood River, OR. John Dillon, codriver for the Widget Rally Team, partnered with Trevor Donison to compete at the Mount Hood Rally on 25 October 2003. Donison, the 1998 national Production class champion who now races an Acura RSX, invited Dillon to navigate just two days prior to the race. The two won a pair of third-place Production class trophies for their efforts.
"It was fun to get back into a Production car," observed Dillon, "just for a change of pace." The Widget codriver normally navigates for Leon Styles in an Open-class Mitsubishi Evolution, a car with twice the horsepower and twice the driven wheels of Donison's Acura. "I gave Trevor a few ideas to consider behind the wheel which I think I helped expand his comfort zone. He tells me he drove faster than he's ever been before."
Dave Hackett, Donison's scheduled codriver, had to withdraw at the last minute. "My wife stepped through the bathroom floor the other day, so it was important that I fixed it right away. I was really looking forward to the Mount Hood Rally, but home comes first."
"I've got to thank John for stepping in at the last minute," reported Donison. "I was ready to throw in the towel, but when he agreed to fly up to Oregon I knew it was going to be a fun event. His experience with a lot of different cars and drivers really helped me improve my skills behind the wheel."
The pair languished in fourth place (in class) for much of the rally, but as Donison grew more comfortable with the car, they began closing in on the third place Mitsubishi Eclipse of Amy BeberVanzo and Tim Sardelich. With two stages remaining, the Acura crew had overtaken their competition--by only five seconds. "I knew Amy would be really pushing for those last two stages," recounted Donison, "so I resolved to push even harder. It worked out too--we picked up another 16 seconds over the last nine miles of the rally."
Donison's next rally will be the 2004 Doo Wops race, headquartered in Hoquiam, Washington. Dillon will introduce potential new sponsors to the sport at the Treeline Rally in mid-November before returning to the Evo of Styles for the season's grand finale, the Ramada Express International Rally headquartered in Laughlin, Nevada.
